U.S. Colleges Must Deal with Piracy

The U.S. Higher Education Opportunity Act (“HEOA”) was signed into law on August 14, 2008. Enforcement of its provisions begin July 1, 2010. ┬áSeveral sections of the HEOA ┬ádeal with unauthorized file sharing on campus networks, requiring all U.S. colleges and universities to provide:

  1. An annual disclosure to students on describing copyright and campus policies on violating copyright.
  2. A plan to “combat” piracy by users of its network.
  3. A plan to offer alternatives to illegal downloading.
