Significance of the Number 18

Are you a math major?

18 is a natural number (a whole or counting number e.g., 1, 2, 3…), and is a composite number, meaning you can multiply factors such as 3 x 6 to get it.  It is a Harshad number in base 10, meaning it is divisible by the sum of its digits when written in base 10.  From Sanskrit harsa (joy) + da (give), the word “Harshad” thus means “joy-giver.”  18 is the only number that equals twice the sum of its digits.

Is science more your interest?

18 is the atomic number for Argon, an inert noble gas used in incandescent and fluorescent lighting, arc welding, and growing semiconductor crystals.    The 18-electron rule helps to predict the stability of a complex in chemistry.

In astronomy, 18 years is the approximate period of the Saros cycle of lunar eclipses.

Are you an art buff?

The number 18 appears in art, in Jackson Pollock’s Number 18, 1951.  Jackson Pollock explained his approach to art as an expression of emotion rather than an illustration.  The number 18 is used in other art titles including a canvas by Sam Francis (Number 18) and a wall panel by Charles Biederman (New York, Number 18).

Would you rather hang out in Hollywood?

In movies, Hangar 18: The UFO Warehouse, is a History Channel documentary film about an alleged hangar at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio where UFO wreckage and inhabitants are stored, and 18 Shades of Dust is a 2001 organized-crime drama.

The number 18 is included in the title of Shakespeare’s lovely poem, Sonnet 18, which begins “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?”  The Bhagavad-gita, one of the 18 books of the Hindu epic Mahabharata, consists of 18 chapters depicting the Kurukshetra War among 18 armies that lasted 18 days.

Parlez-vous Hebrew?

In Hebrew, the letters that make up the word chai, meaning “life,” have a numerological value of 18 (het = 8, yud = 10).  Thus the number 18 is considered good luck, and many times monetary gifts on special Jewish occasions such as weddings and bar/bat mitzvahs are given in multiples of 18.

Is this your first time voting?

The age of majority in much of the world, including most of the United States and Canada, is 18, although in many countries there continue to be age-based restrictions on certain activities such as voting.

Are you a sports fan?

In sports, certain of the #18 jerseys either have been retired or have taken on particular significance, as in jersey #18 for the Louisiana State University football team the Tigers, which is passed to a player who is expected to overcome adversity and be a team leader.

And finally, copyright law!
